Cannabis addiction
Cannabis, also called marijuana, weed or hashish, is the most used drug in the world and therefore also in the Netherlands. Hashish, weed or marijuana is readily available in the Netherlands via ‘coffee shops’. The Dutch are renowned world-wide for their tolerance towards cannabis products.
Many youngsters and young adults use cannabis. At schools, smoking cannabis is considered just as normal as smoking cigarettes. Cannabis products do not lead to addiction straight away. Cannabis addiction is a slow process, which is why most cannabis users believe that using the substance is not dangerous and that they can stop blowing whenever they decide to.
However, individuals who are more likely to develop an addiction (often determined genetically) will start by using cannabis or alcohol until the desired effect is no longer there. That is often when they decide to try out a stronger stimulant, such as cocaine or heroin.
Cannabis directly affects the central nervous system. It has a relaxing effect, makes one feel happy and carefree, and intensifies emotions. It induces a state of euphoria and the senses are enhanced.
Often, side effects only become apparent in the long term after regular cannabis use. Any immediate effects can also be experienced as unpleasant by some people.
The side effects of cannabis use include: sleeping problems, restlessness, reduced responsiveness and a reduced ability to concentrate, forgetfulness, anxiety, panic and irritability. Your short-term memory may be affected as well.
If
your cannabis use is troubling you, it may be a good idea to assess
whether your cannabis use has become problematic and whether or not
you have lost your ability to function “normally” without
cannabis.
